Ah shit, wrong response. The generator makes use of a rounding bug in Terraria. I dunno the details because I never bothered looking into them. As far as I understand if you have a large enough tank the water/lava will be rounded somehow and never be 0, thus can't get empty in essence. That's why there's a minimum of a.b tiles necessary. Also you need plug the generator once you're finished. If you don't, and log off, then log in the tank will be empty.

Mine are simple 49x25 tiles tanks with a 'pipe'. When I need water/lava I break the plug in the pipes. Once I'm done, I plug the pipe.
