Download the Intel driver from their website, but download the ZIP version. Unzip to any folder, and find a file called ' igdlh64.inf'.
Edit the file, and look for the line that says ' Windows 8.1 Install' (enclosed by two lines of '). Right under that line, change “NTamd64.6.3″ to “NTamd64.6. Install the driver manually through control panel, directing it to the inf file directly (you might need to disable driver verification for it to work). You obviously have a 64 bit version. For the 32 bit version, the file is igdlh.inf (searched for.inf) but I don't see any line with ' Windows 8.1 Install' on it or any 'NTamd' in the file. I have build 1096 which intel claims to be the latest. Trying to install this manually without editing the file in Windows 7 compatibility mode results in a Code 43 and Windows reverts to Microsoft default driver.

FYI, if you go into Settings, System, Display, Advanced Display Settings and select Display Adapter Properties, and click List All Modes, you can get 1280x1024 resolution. It still isn't great but it is better than 1024x768 or 800x600. No wide screen options though.
